Freaky Behaviour duo Mark Crumbs & Joey Burkitt have smashed the house scene in the last 18 months with bombs dropping in all the right places..
Just to give you an idea .. Big Wigg and man of impecable taste Mark Farina has been charting and playing their tunes constantly .! A little like me !
He started a recent Farina podcast off with their tune Moonlight that is currently scheduled for release on the mighty So Sound Recordings .. The lads hail from Hull on of the unlikely cities in the UK that you thought would be leading the next wave of nu skool funky house.. Only comparability with the like of Wattie Green & Corduroy Mavericks. I managed to pin the lads down to some questions to give us an insight to what makes the groovers tick...

So lads after your first release hit the top 100 in stompy what's been going down with your sound ?

Yes January 2010 saw our First release 'GOTTA MAKE TRAX' on FICUS TREE MUSIC , of which all 3 tracks featured in the STOMPY TOP 100. with "JIM BIGSWING" cracking the TOP 20. our 2nd 'Release the 'BEHAVIOUR SELF E.P' also on FICUS TREE has seen great success also with 'REWIND ME" cracking the TOP 50 on STOMPY. not bad for the first couple of releases!!! Also with tracks signed to GREENHOUSE RECORDINGS "SPRING WMC SAMPLER and with remixes from Wattie Green and Mark and Stevens, Jam Funk... we couldn't ask for a better start!! Currently In high Demand from Various labels globally, along with a string of remixes on the way, these boys are ones to keep an eye on!!

(Mark:) For Me its CDJ.. Love the idea of digital but i think it takes all the charm away from being a DJ, Yeah its nice and quick but i like taking my time to go through tunes and arrange them and take the time writing on them and flicking through you're wallet to find them… just scrolling through a list doesn't do it for me.

Q3/ Ok you are currently getting you tunes dropped by some Top shelf DJ .. what's your fav
situation you've herd your tunes being played and do you have a u-tube clip to show us ..??
(Joey) It's really nice to hear and see footage of “Sneak” or “Farina” “Doc Martin” etc.. playin our
music out and seein the crowds enjoying it as much as we do!.....Its a great reward.

Mark: I think my Favourite has to be Mark farina dropped 'What's on the Menu' @ WMC.. Probably as it was the first time we saw any of the big cats playing our stuff!!

Q5/ What your parents style in music because i have a feel you guys grew up on some great
sounds.?
(Joey) My dad was a drummer from the age of 15 and played with a lot of great bands around the
world! My mother was a singer and also worked with a lot of different outfits through the 60s and
70s, so you could say i had a varied and rich musical environment, ranging from Big Band Swing,
Jazz, Soul, and Funk.

Mark: I had a very eclectic musical upbringing My parents musical tastes spanned all genres really… every from 'The Who and Velvet underground, Van morrison to the Bee gees. Also filled with loads of funk, Blues and Motown!!

Q7/ Free Parties , Warehouse vibez .. what's your roots .. mine come from a field in wales .. when
the festival days of Kerry & castle Morton were the tihing to be done ..
(Joey)-Used to go to an old country club in the middle of a field near where i grew up,..it was called Kilpin just outside of Howden where my school was. I was about 15 and used to sneak into the back of the club with my mates to see what was goin on?...Wasn't really interested in school after that!
Ha ha....Changed my life.......some of the party's went on for a couple of days!

Mark: we both used to go to without knowing each other back then! They were cool underground parties, One night that i used to go to without fail was a night in my home town called 'Quench' i first saw farina there in the 90's.. that was one of the best nights about!! other than that there was always BACK2BASICS in Leeds… An amazing night that has been around for nearly 20 years and still does the business!

Q8/ What's the house scene like in your city .. You get to play out in the local clubs ..
We are lucky really! There is some really good nights in Leeds! A lot of the nights are
Tech and Deep House dominated, but all really inspiring music.There are now some really good
Nu- Disco nights about aswell. Lots of House party's always going on...we play out whenever and
wherever we can.

Q9/ 3 bits of studio kit you couldn't live without ..
Fridge, Cider, and Cigs!… Oh and a banjo and a kazoo!!

Q10/ World Domination must be just around the corner .. your tunes have world wide coverage are we going to see a tour schedule ..??
We have a few gigs lined and we will possibly look at a Tour in the newyear. More than
anything, it would be great to meet and play with the kool kats that we have made friends with
around the globe over the past 15 months.

Q11/ With success in remixes and now a flush of original ep .. you likely to start a label some
where you'll call home ??
We have a Label launching in June/July “REAL GOOD MUSIC” we are looking to push the best
in (House/Tech/Nu-Disco/Downtempo/Hip-Hop) The Debut release will be a sampler of New and
established artists, Projecting a taste of things to come! Watch out for it!!!

scene ..??
big big fans of The revenge, 6th borough project, ilija rudman etc… the production on some of this stuff just blows us away!! love the tempo of this style too!!
Really love this style, we are looking to release some of the Nu-Disco sound on our label.

Q17/ Leeds the home of some great labels and artists.. 2020 Vision Audio Jack .. is it a small
enough scene you all get to hang .. party together??
Leeds is great for meeting people in music and hearing fresh sounds! So we are never short of
inspiration for new projects. We have some great friends in music nearby and get together whenever we can. We are lucky enough to knock heads with some of the 20/20 crew now and again and we are also very good friends with the Audiojack boys!!

Q18/ What's you fav tune you have produced ?

Bringing this fresh session with current top producer Giom ... French born .. Now digging the mean streets of London Town kicking around the house scene with some of today's hardest working bods...

In a short time Giom has stormed us with tightly funky groove driven tunes.. With so many highlights it would be hard for any DJ to pick his favorite..
I have a great 20 questions here just after his new Album Clips & Spaces Was released on the awesome Lost My Dog Label...

Bonjour! My name’s Giom, I’m a French musician living in London, and I’ve been producing and playing House music for about 10 years, and been releasing records for 5. I also play drums, like to cook and love studio gear. I have a mix cd out on Lost My Dog records in May and you should definitely listen to it.

Q1/ Good things always come from your studio... As a fan of your music for a long time now i don't think i miss a Giom release.. my favourite to date would be is the collaboration you dropped with Funk Medateriano .. it's got so much funk .. What's your favourite of your production .. & is it just because its so damn funky or because it's pushed the boundaries of your sound ..??

Thanks a lot, glad you like my music J The truth is, I don’t really have a favourite track of mine because by the time I’ve finished an original or a remix, I’ve spent so much time working on it that I’m usually a bit tired of it so can’t really be objective. But I’d say, out of all the tracks I’ve made, the 2 that are the most special are “Party All Night” (recorded as Bobby & Klein with my friend Vinz) because that’s the fist EVER track that got us noticed, and the other one is the track that I’ve probably played the most out, “Things U Do” on LMD. That’s a good, quirky party track that I still enjoy playing now!

Q2/ What inspired the move from France to London .. ??

It’s all about music. I started playing the drums at age 15 and by the time I was 16, I knew I wanted to do it professionally. So at 18 I finished school and 2 months later was in London to do a music degree, playing drums all day long. I loved it. I didn’t speak a word of English back then but that was the least of my worries J And while studying and meeting lots of musicians I eventually got into production, discovered House music, fell in love with it etc…

Q3/ Do you still do session drumming ..?? If so who's the most famous artist you've work with .. or the most famous song you've worked on ..

Kasabian is definitely the most famous band I’ve worked with. Their producers at the time called me to play the kit on a few tracks, which all ended up as B-sides HAHA! Apart from that I’ve done countless sessions for TV adverts, commercials... My old band Transcargo did have a top 10 single in Italy in 2003 so we played a show in Milan in front of 40.000 people or something, it was amazing… I also play the drums for a UK singer called Zarif, and we supported Beyonce in 2009 on her UK stadium tour, so that was a lot of fun too.

Q5/ We have constantly been receiving top shelf sounds through the Lost My Dog label .. it's no surprise we see your up coming album on LMD .. Any thing deivine that has inspired the sounds on the 17tracker or you just taking a chance to reflect in this fast moving scene ??

I wanted to make a mix cd for some time but no label ever asked me to do one. So when these guys did I said yes straight away. They gave me a hard drive with the entire LMD catalog on wav, so I listened to every track, starting to make a list for myself and after having a clearer idea about what I was going to do, decided it’d be even more fun to rework some of these tracks especially for the mix. So I ended up re-making 4 tracks, which you’ll be able to hear on the CD.

Giom’s relationship with Lost My Dog began at the Sonar festival in 2009 after a chance encounter at the LMD terrace party. Everyone hit it off and the Frenchman was soon remixing Bang Bang and Bleep District, before penning his own ‘Things U Do EP’, which hit the top 10 charts of Beatport, Stompy and Traxsource. His ‘Unreleased Remixes’ was released in early 2011 to similar success.

Q6/ I have just bounced through the Promo for Clips & Space .. i get the impression it going to be a hum dinger of a release Any thing youd like to say about the way you view todays current house scene..

Thank you, I hope you’re right! I think the current scene is awesome, there’s a lot of great music around and I’m really buzzing from it all. There’s also a lot of not-so-good music around too but to be honest I think it’s better to spend your time looking for the good stuff and enjoying it instead of complaining about the state of something that “isn’t as good it used to be etc…” Boring!

Q7/ Tracktor Vs Serato !!! have you embraced the digital revolution in your DJ sets .. or our you still a Vinyl man ??

Neither! I switched from vinyl to CDs about 5 years ago and still use these when I play out, but I know I eventually will get Traktor or Serato one day, not sure which one yet nor when I’ll do it though. This new digital DJing technology totally fascinates me. All these new possibilities, like re-mixing on the fly, the auto-synch, all the FX, I think it’s brilliant! It’s taking our “job” to a totally different performing level, to the point where putting on one track after the other could in my opinion becoming obsolete... Of course the “art” of selecting and mixing records is something some people have spent their entire career doing so I can understand why people say this new technology is not DJing, and maybe they’re right, it’s not DJing, it’s something different, like “performing and improvising pre-recorded music on computers”. So there you go, I think this is the future. Also I can’t be arsed with vinyls anymore, they’re too heavy to carry! But I do have 3000 at home and I’m keeping all of them thank you very much, just not for playing out J

Q8/ Winter Music Conference Vs Sonar .. which do you recommend to the party goer ?

Miami is hilarious, so if you can afford it, then I think every DJ should go and see it for themselves. I went there in 2007 and 2008 and had a fantastic time on both occasions, played at a few parties too. I’d say for me Sonar is a bit more interesting as it’s much easier to get to from London, and it’s also home to incredible parties and groundbreaking music. But they’re both really fun festivals with good music, so really everyone should go to both!

Q9/ What do you see your self doing in twenty years time ..?? Does it still have a house beat ??

I can totally see myself producing bands if I still have my ears by then. Pop, rock bands maybe? Making records for sure though, I don’t think I could ever do anything else in my life. I’ll also definitely still be playing the kit, that’s for sure J Maybe I’ll have a smooth jazz band by then, and play on cruise ships for rich women… Now that’s a plan!

Q11/ Favourite city you have DJ in ..

Seattle has a special place in my heart. There’s a party there called Flammable taking place every Sunday and I think it’s the best house music party I’ve ever been to. The tunes, the sound, the tempo, it just works for me. I think it’s awesome there.

Q13/ House music to me it's a soul thing something that will be with me until the day i die .. Does house mean the same to you .. or could you happily never hear or make another house beat ..?? We know you'd probably never stop making music .. just wanting to know if you would do a Joey Youngman on us ..??

Man, if I can become as successful as Joey Youngman making music that I LOVE which isn’t house music, then you can be assured I’ll be doing it. Joey managed to re-invent himself and totally kills it on the other side. I say fair-play to him, good job! I won’t be playing his latest music in my present sets but I have the biggest respect for him.

... as a label are sure kicking off 2011 with some blasting releases.. Exposing not only the deeper side of label owner Fabian with his Hotel Voyage Complaiton series but favorites releasing new underground sounds from all parts of the globe.

We managed to get the chance to bounce some questions in to the path of JazzyEyewear.. aka Fabian to see what he can tel us about where when and what is the cards for his Label ...

Hi thanks for the interview time. I have always enjoyed the Jazzy Eyewear music on SoSound Recordings you have brought to the house lovers worldwide. Infectious, smooth House music is what I know to expect from your label.

Now reaching its 45th release if we take in to account the latest Hotel Voyage and No Limit To Love albums, its a great time to stop and reflect on such a great bunch of producers you have worked with from around the globe which you’ve correlated on some smoking hot mixes.

** What the inspiration for the (Hotel) Voyage into Sound?

Since I am a musician before I was into electronic music, I’ve always been really open to all kinds of music styles, I have recently started 2 new labels which will be releasing a wide range of music, besides house music; from that point I’ve started looking and finding so many talented new artists from all over the world and that’s where the voyage started, when I found all these wonderful songs, they were telling me an story, like an old movie..

Right ... I just love the blend of beats and would have to say you were brought up in a musical family…if Argentina was your birth place did the sounds and rhythms of your youth influence your sound when it comes to productions today?

I think so, my parents and older brother loved to sing, they also played guitar, I grow up with so much music around me, since a little kid I’d love to harmonize with my voice any song I heard. There were lots of influences from the bands I grew up with to the music our grandparents would listen to, from Argentine folk, to classic rock, to new wave.. I started singing live when I was 6, with my dad playing the guitar and had my first band when I was 14.. I took guitar lessons of classical music, jazz, rock, blues, etc so that was my formation.

Argentina to Miami ... was it something in the water that brought you to Miami?

Not really, actually I moved from Buenos Aires to Chicago (I LOVE Chicago), I knew a family there whom I stayed with for the first couple of months and then I moved to downtown on my own.. (1990)

I must add a great year for underground house 1990. the year i found Rave music as it was way back .. In the underground free parties of the U.K

I see you always have a throw down at Miami WMC … what’s your plans so far this year?

I’ve been working so much with the labels and music production that I haven’t had the chance to really focus on that. It’s been always a lot of work put into the WMC but honestly, this year for the first time I really feel like relaxing and enjoying my self, I’m sure we’ll do something.. in addition I will be spinning at the Apt Entertainment event plus other parties I’ve been invited to.

Have you moved in to the new era of Digital Mixing? If so what’s your tool of choice when it comes to DJ’ing and what are your thoughts on TracktoS4 vs Serato-Bridge?

I think a good DJ is not so much about the gear they use but what can they do with the crowd, keeping the momentum, the surprise effect, and most of all keeping the crowd interested and exited.

I’m a big fan of Pioneer players and mixers, I feel at home with that equipment, I have the Pioneer CDJ 900’s where you can insert a USB key with many tunes, make your folders, play lists, etc and still handle the files like mixing CDs while having instant access to them, plus you don’t get scratched CDs.

I do not like to play with a computer in front of me and don’t feel attracted to play with 4 turntables at once on tracktor with the sync button engaged ;) however, they are both, 2 solid platforms and an option for many.

Your label and its off-shoot Uma has consistently received support by all the heavyweight DJs... do you have a stand out memory of hearing your own productions being dropped either by a favorite DJ or in a special place? You know the sort of feeling you’ll tell your grand kids about. And what was the tune .??

The most vibrant moment like that was soon after I started releasing music as Jazzy Eyewear, I was living in Chicago and I went to this place called Slick’s, on Wednesday was great house music and sort of like industry night, where all the DJs and heads would go, I was on the dancefloor while DJ Diz was spinning, and he brought this track that sounded amazing, particularly the way he mixed it in.. all of a sudden I realized it was my own song which I gave him a few days before on CD, the song was ‘Girls & Boys” (released on Aroma) and up until that point I haven’t play it out because I wasn’t really sure how good it was until I heard it that night and it sounded amazing, I felt so overwhelmed with the feeling that I started telling everyone on the floor that I made it..

If you could sum up the feeling you want a listener to have when enjoying your new music what would that be?

I love to imagine that I can make people traveling in their minds while listening to my music, make them happy, make them wanna dance, make them wanna have sex!

So Sound looks like it is set for even more quality releases in 2011 … can you give me a sneak run down of what fans may have coming?

I am so excited, we have so many great releases coming out that honestly, I can’t wait to see people’s reaction to it.

We are releasing 2 EPs and a full album from new German act ‘Les Loups’ they are amazing, like the new Daft Punk! We have a full downtempo album by our A&R director Funkyloco as well as his new EP, I have an amazing single coming up as Jazzy Eyewear, called ‘The Renaissance’ (to my opinion, the best track I’ve ever made) New music from superstar Toomy Disco, A mix compilation by Funkyloco called ‘Weekend of Love’, a new single ‘My Angel” from deep duo from Spain, Red Box Lounge and that will keep us busy for a while

What DJ styles and what cities would you say play the major influences in your sound?

Chicago has always played the main influence but that is combined with San Francisco, Nottingham, London, Paris, Berlin & Buenos Aires.

Do you find discovering a new unsigned artist in the scene today inspiring.?

I think at this point is one of my biggest inspiration. Working, discovering, producing and developing our own artists and creating our own unique roster is something that is really fulfilling and makes me very proud
